Hive Unveils Connected Camera

British smart home vendor Hive is the next company to take on entry-level security with the Hive Camera, a product similar to the Nest Cam allowing users to monitor their home via companion mobile device app.

The company allows for 24/7 HD streaming, and can be controlled and accessed via mobile app. It also features built-in two-way audio, motion sensor, audio detection, night vision and a wide viewing angle. Customers can have it record all movement and log time and date, which is stored locally before viewing on the app. It can also zoom in remotely and produce one of three sounds (police siren, dog bark or ringing alarm) when triggered by a user.

Ring announces an update to its self-explanatory Video Doorbell-- the Video Doorbell 2, with features from the 2016 Video Doorbell Pro (namely 1080p video and motion-detection zones) and a rechargeable battery.

In comparison, the Video Doorbell Pro depends on wired power, making the Video Doorbell 2 an easier to install option. The rechargeable battery is swappable, allowing users to rotate batteries to keep the doorbell powered 24/7 without need for additional wiring. Of course, connection to an existing doorbell system remains an option.

Logitech Presents Circle 2 Indoor/Outdoor Camera

Logitech announces a flexible security camera option-- the Circle 2, a smart camera designed for both indoor and outdoor use, as well as both wired and wireless use.

The Circle 2 is a small circular device with a 180-degree 1080p camera on one side and a smart connector on the other. The idea behind it is customers can set it up in different configurations according to the mount they use. Currently mounting options amount to four, with a  wall mount, battery mount, window mount or plug mount.

The camera is weatherproof, meaning it can be used anywhere once paired with a suitable mount (the mount is necessary, and the Circle 2 will not work without it). In addition, Logitech also offers accessories such as weatherproof extension cord and an extra rechargeable battery.

Following a 2015 crowdfunding campaign Friday Labs launches the Friday Lock-- a smart lock promising to be the "smallest and most stylish" retrofit option.

The Friday Lock features Bluetooth, wifi and HomeKit connectivity, and comes in a slender package in a range of finishes. The minimalist design lacks a display or any features making it look like a smart device, and interchangeable die cast metal shells fit with the rest of the house or room.

Installation involves a Friday Universal Baseplate the makers say requires no locksmith, while a Door Adapter Plate ensures a secure fit on doors needing longer tailpieces. The smart lock is powered with a battery able to run for up to 3 months between charges (via included USB charger).

The Aurora has a "premium" image sensor able to capture high-resolution video under low-light conditions. A 4-in-1 design allows indoor mounting via stand, wall-mount kit and magnetic mount, while a smartphone app provides setup, recording schedules, motion detection zones, watching of live or recorded video, event notifications and speaking through the camera.

D-Link announces the availability of the Omna 180 Cam HD (DSH-C310)-- a first HomeKit-enabled product in the Omna portfolio allowing users to check on their homes from their iDevices.

First seen back at CES 2017, the Omna 180 Cam HD carries a 1080p camera with 180-degree field of view, microphone and speaker with 2-way audio, infrared night vision and motion detection sensors in a cylindrical form factor. It stores video clips directly to microSDCX card, with no further subscription required.

Blink Intros Outdoor Camera

Blink announces a first outdoor camera-- the Blink XT, a small 1080p wireless camera able to run for over 2 years on a pair of regular lithium AA batteries customers can place just about anywhere.

Like other Blink cameras the XT features a 110-degree field of view and uses the same mounting system, only with the addition of IP-65-rated construction and infrared night vision. It does need to be in range of a wifi signal, but once connected to the internet the camera provides Alexa integration and free cloud-based storage for the viewing of 5-60 second clips triggered by the built-in motion sensor via iOS and Android Home Monitor app.

Users can also pair the XT with indoor Blink cameras to create a home security network.

Nest Cam Streams to Android, Apple TV

The Nest platform gets a 5.9 update-- one providing Cam security camera users with a number of new features, including the streaming of feeds on 4th generation Apple TV and Android TV units.

In the near future Android TV and Apple TV device owners can download a Nest app on the tvOS App Store allowing one to easily switch from Netflix binges to the checking who is at the door. The app also includes toggles between live feeds and video history scrubbing for "reality TV you actually care about."

Another Cam feature in the Nest update is "instaclip"-- a means to capture and share short clips based on potentially interesting moments captured by the security camera. Generating an instaclip involves tapping the "clip" icon before customising the length of the clip in question. Creating instaclips requires a Nest Aware subscription, and clips can be uploaded to either online archive or stored on iDevice.

Netgear's Arlo unit announces the Pro-- a wireless security camera featuring ultra-wide 130-degree viewing angles, two-way audio and motion recognition within a weatherproof body.

The Arlo Pro can be connected to the mains mains, but it promises to work for along time on battery alone a special low-power consumption router and a proprietary base station Netgear claims allows for up to 6 months of use on a single charge. Customers can also easily swap batteries through an optional dual-bay Arlo Pro Charging Station.

As for the actual camera, RGB-IR night vision technology provides clear high resolution video even in total darkness, while a passive IR motion sensor detects movement at a range of 7m. Customers can check footage via app on smartphones, tablets and even Apple TV, and the camera can also be connect to smart home platforms including IFTTT and Samsung SmartThings.

Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt Gets Home Compatibility

Schlage announces an update of the Sense Smart Deadbolt app-- one adding compatibility with the iOS 10 Home app to allow control via Siri voice commands or the iOS Control Center.

The update also brings push notifications whenever the deadbolt is locked or unlocked, while the Schlage Sense app allows users to manage access codes, change lock settings, view the last 100 times the lock was used, receive installation help and contact customers service.
