Logitech Aims Rugged Combo at Education

The Logitech Rugged Combo is a combination of case and keyboard allowing 9.7-inch tablets such as the iPad to withstand the knocks and drops faced by devices used by children in the classroom.

The Rugged Combo protects tablets from drops up to 1.8m, and includes a kickstand with mechanical hinges promising to hold the device sturdily at any angle. Meanwhile the keyboard is physically connected via secure proprietary connector, and provides "laptop-like typing" as well as a secure data entry point in case teachers want to submit tests on the tablet.

A transparent window on the back of the case allows authorities to scan and mark tablets before and after students use school property.

A "Flow" Battery Powers and Cools Chips

Scientists at ETH Zurich and IBM Research Zurich build what they call a tiny "redox flow" battery-- a battery able to simultaneously power and cool chips, especially those stacked on top of each other, pancake-style.

A flow battery creates electricity through the electrochemical reaction of two liquid electrolytes. A closed electrolyte loop pumps the two liquids into the battery cell from outside, and the liquids also serve as a cooling medium, dissipating excess heat from the chip stack via the same circuit.

Samsung Upgrades Gear VR at MWC

Samsung presents an upgrade on the Gear VR headset-- one complete with a physical controller accessory promising "quicker selection and interaction" in virtual experiences.

The actual headset is more or less identical to the Gear VR designed for use with the recalled Galaxy Note 7. It offers a 101-degree field of view and is compatible with both USB-C and microUSB Samsung devices, including the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6 Edge+, S6 and S6 Edge.

Meanwhile the controller (imaginatively named "Gear VR Controller") is the result of a collaboration with Oculus. Designed for single-hand use, it has a touchpad and trigger for in-game actions, as well as integrated home, volume and back buttons for immersive media controls.

Back in November 2016 Motorola launched a competition for developers wanting to create Mods for the Moto Z smartphone. One such accessory is the Linc, a "smart" walkie-talkie attachment.

According to maker Arrow Electronics the Linc allows users to communicate at a range of up to 9km without cell service. It operates on consumer-level GMRS/FRS frequencies with 120 private channels, and sends voice, SMS and even GPS locations to single or multiple users to other Linc units or conventional 2-way radios.

Moment Kickstarts Battery Photo Case

Moment combines mobile photography with battery cases with the Battery Photo Case-- a self-descriptive iPhone 7 case, with two mounting slots matching the iPhone 7 Plus' dual-lens setup.

The slots allow users to add Moment lenses to either of the two iPhone 7 Plus camera (but not simultaneously). An iPhone 7 version featuring one mounting slot is also available. A new lens-locking interface clicks lenses in place. Customers can attach previous Moment lenses through a small adapter, although the company says the lenses will be reworked in the future for use with the new interface.

As for the battery, the iPhone 7 version carries a 2500mAh power pack, while the iPhone 7 Plus version clocks at 3500mAh. Case construction is in plastic and rubber, with a Lightning port at the bottom passing power to the phone.

Logitech announces the MK850 Performance Wireless Keyboard and Mouse-- a matching peripheral set designed for "all-day comfort and increased productivity" through Bluetooth Smart and 2.4GHz wireless connectivity.

The keyboard is a full-size number complete with cushioned palm rest and "carefully-crafted" keys. It has a slight 3D curvature to help the hands stay at a more natural angle, while the tilt legs in the bottom are adjustable. Logitech adds the batter allows for up to 3 years of service, and the whole thing weighs 733g.

Meanwhile the mouse is designed for right handers. It has a non-slip soft rubber surface, 8 buttons, a "Hyperfast" scroll wheel and a 10000dpi optical tracking sensor. The battery promise up to 2 years of service.
