The CEO of Indian iPhone assembler Wistron, Robert Hwang, suggests the next generation iPhone will include waterproofing and wireless charging, Nikkei reports.

next iPhoneAdmittedly, Hwang did not speak directly about the iPhone-- his reference was simply to "upcoming smartphones"-- but rumours do persist on the next iPhone having such features. Wistron is a smaller rival to the likes of Foxconn and Pegatron, and is reportedly building an upcoming 5.5-inch iPhone, as well as the iPhone SE and iPhone 6.

The grapevine currently says Apple will reveal three iPhone models this year-- a flagship "iPhone 8" with a curved OLED display, and a pair of "iPhone 7s" devices. All next generation iPhones are said to carry wireless charging capability, specifically contact-based charging via compatible charging pad or surface.

In addition, well-connected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the 2017 iPhones will alco include quick USB 3.0 charging through the Lightning port.

On the waterproofing side, one has to keep in mind the iPhone 7 already features an IP67 rating, allowing it to be submerged in 1m of water for 30 minutes. The improvements suggested by Hwang might come in the shape of an IP68 rating, making a smartphone able to withstand a 1.5m dive for 30 minutes.
