Harman announces "a first for the connected car industry"-- the implementation of Apple CarPlay in-car infotainment systems through wireless connection.

Harman wirelessThe system uses both Bluetooth and wifi, with Bluetooth handling the connection to the iPhone while wifi takes care of data transfers. Harman adds the system provides flexibility between native and CarPlay Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and allows the simultaneous operation of head unit functionality and CarPlay navigation.

CarPlay provides the control of various iPhone functions, including calls, music playback, mobile office and navigation, through the car display. It also adds voice-based controls via Siri.

“Harman continues to deliver options to consumers for seamless integration of multiple mobile ecosystems into our integrated automotive platform,” the company says. “Whether CarPlay, Android Auto, or any other projection mode solution, Harman is the industry leader with pioneering support for these accessory apps. We look forward to working with automakers to roll out this technology and together with many Harman solutions to offer consumers safe, secure, and harmonious driving experiences.”

The Harman wireless CarPlay system will be first deployed by a "luxury Germany automaker," a probably reference to BMW, the only automaker currently supporting wireless CarPlay as a built-in feature.
